Audio messages

Communication techniques on WhatsApp tended to vary according to individual personality and preference, or reflected more social forms of communication. A number of research participants from Sicily were fond of using WhatsApp to leave audio messages. These were mainly family communications, and were often laden with emotion and affectionate greetings and salutations. For example, a Sicilian mother greeted her daughter in her own voice, starting the message with ‘My joy, how are you?’, and following up with a detailed rundown of the day’s events, specific goings-on in their lives, reminders about birthdays and what happened at a grandchild’s nursery that day. This style reflected the person’s offline communications, which were tactile as well as vocal, creating colourful and vibrant forms of expression.
